Dec 3-9

Math: Sullivan does math in his first grade workbook.  He is doing adding, subtracting and sequencing. Daisy, Simon, and Sarajoy are working on Teaching Textbooks online. Daisy is learning to manage her time better so she has more time for math.

Language Arts: Each child does a journaling assignment each day. They also have language workbooks they are learning from. They are also spending time on Spelling City. They each have a book they read to mom or dad each day.

History: The kids each have a history-themed literature book.  We are enjoying our studies of early Americans.

Science: Our Science magazines are so fun. The kids love learning about animals from Ranger Rick and Zoobooks.  We also did a mystery science lesson this week and Daisy did science experiments with her siblings.

Music: We are getting better and better at Good King Wenceslas on our violins. We can play it in two parts now. 

Tech: Daisy got really into photography this week, learning all about shutter speed. Sarajoy and Sullivan are having fun making creations and making up games with dominoes.  Simon would do tech all day if he could.  He is making plans to start his own  youtube channel.  He loves modding on Tynker and playing minecraft.

November 26-Dec 3

Math: Daisy, Simon, and Sarajoy did Teaching Textbooks online. Sullivan did his math workbook. Simon is excited to understand division better. Sarajoy is learning about fractions and sequencing.

Language Arts: We read some more chapters in Indian Captive. Sullivan is on his way through Mummies in the Morning. Sarajoy is reading Ponies at the Point and The Littles. Daisy is reading a series of Regency Romance novels. Each of the kids does writing each day as well.

Science: We did a mystery science lesson on weather this week. The kids played in the snow. Sullivan has been checking the weather and reading and watching weather news.

History: The kids are each reading a history themed novel. We share a lot of family history experiences with setting up Christmas and doing family traditions.

Music: It was fun to play Good King Wenceslas as a family for our new group piece.  The kids each have an individual Christmas song as well.

Technology: Daisy is taking lots of pictures. Sarajoy opened a new Goldiblocks set with a parachute girl. Sullivan loves building with legos. We put some Lego tape on the bed in his room. Simon is having so much fun coding mods on minecraft.

November 20-26

We are taking the week off for Thanksgiving Break

November 12-19

Math: Sullivan did his math workbook. He is working on solid figures and subtraction. Simon, Sarajoy and Daisy did lessons in Teaching Textbooks.

Language Arts: Each of the kids does typing instructor, a journal entry, and a language assignment each day. Simon is really excited he started Fablehaven and A Series of Unfortunate Events. Sullivan is nearly finished with A Knight at Dawn, and Sarajoy decided to start Animal Ark Books. This week Daisy read Edenbrooke to Sarajoy as well.

History: We read from our Cricket magazines. Each of the kids is reading literature related to history. We explored an antique museum with artifacts from American History.

Science: The kids played in the leaves and snow. We read from our science magazines. We visited a hot springs and spent a day at a farm.

Music: Each child is working in their Suzuki book and practices piano daily. We are studying John Williams the composer.

Technology: The kids have discovered and downloaded several new video games. They spend time chatting with friends and each other on Google hangouts.

Nov 5-11

Math: This week Simon had a lot of questions about algebra and how to use letters in math. Daisy, Simon , and Sarajoy did Teaching Textbooks and Sullivan used his Grade 1 workbook.

Language Arts: Daisy caught up on her Speech and Debate homework after spending a week at her cousins farm. They inspired her to read more too. Simon, Sarajoy, and Sulli keep plugging along with Daily reading and journal writing. They like writing to their brother in Mexico. I started reading Little House in the Big Woods to Sarajoy and Indian in the cupboard to the boys.

Science: We read about turtles and owls in our Zoobooks magazine. We got our first snowfall so we talked about weather and played in the snow.

History: We explored  our history magazine for the first time. We love reading our American themed literature about Natives and settlers.

Music: Everyone is working hard on their Suzuki songs. we play Amazing Grace and Beauty and the beast as a group. We sing together every week, and each of the kids practiced piano daily. Daisy has especially been inspired by her cousins to practice more.

Technology: Sarajoy did a power point presentation on New York for our Geography group. She loves playing with her goldiblocks. Simon is always asking and figuring things out on the computer. He has been especially interested in music playlists lately. He lives playing games online with his cousin in Idaho. Daisy keeps working on photography skills and Sullivan loves all the building sets. This week he did a hangouts chat online with Mom as well.

October 29-Nov 5

Math: Sullivan had a hard time figuring out one of his math activities this week, but he felt really proud when he figured it out. Simon was excited that he can now add faster than his friend. He feels really good about his progress in math using Teaching Textbooks.  He's excited to get to division. Sarajoy and Daisy continue their Teaching Textbook lessons

Language Arts: Daisy placed 7th in Impromptu at her first speech and debate competition! The kids each do a daily journal entry, grammar lesson, and read aloud. Sarajoy finished The Courage of Sarah Noble.

History: Sullivan was an Indian (Native American) for Halloween.  His dad was a mountain man.  The kids enjoy learning about and playing Native American toys and props. They are also each reading a book out loud that relates to history.

Science: The kids made a big pile of leaves and jumped off the retaining wall into it.  Ranger Rick is helping them learn about a lot of animals. Simon and his friend did a bunch of experiments with baking soda and vinegar.  Their favorite was the exploding water bottle.

Music: The kids each practice from their Suzuki book each day. Working on Beauty and the Beast and Amazing Grace as a group.

Technology: Simon is having so much fun on Tynker! We got a new Tinker crate in the mail. Sullivan and Sarajoy love the math manipulatives that they call "Minecraft Blocks." They have all been having fun with Minecraft and Google Hangouts.

Ocober 23-29

Math: Daisy, Simon, and Sarajoy did Teaching Textbooks lessons. Sullivan did his 1st grade math workbook.

Language Arts: Each child reads aloud and does a journal entry daily. Sullivan finished his first chapter book! Dinosaurs Before Dark. Sarajoy is reading The Courage of Sarah Noble, Simon is reading Indian Stories, Daisy is reading Calico Captive.

Science: Playing in the Autumn leaves has been a great hands on way to learn about the seasons and changing weather and plants. We also got a new Ranger Rick magazine that the kids have all enjoyed.

History: The kids each has a read aloud that has a historical theme.  They also have enjoyed playing with our teepee and miniature Native American figurines.

Tech: Daisy continues to amaze us with her beautiful photography.  She especially loves capturing nature.  Simon hit a breakthrough with figuring out how to make and apply minecraft mods on Tynker! Sullivan has been playing minecraft with Simon as well as creating designs with pattern blocks. Sarajoy is also enjoying the pattern blocks.

Music: Each of the children is working on their individual lessons in Suzuki violin as well as the group song Amazing Grace and Beauty and the Beast.

October 15-22

Math: Daisy, Simon, and Sarajoy continue to work online with Teaching Textbooks.  Sullivan has been doing a workbook and playing with manipulatives.

Language Arts: The children each complete a language activity, journal entry, and read out loud each day. Sullivan is reading Dinosaurs Before Dark, Sarajoy is reading The Courage of Sarah Noble, Simon is reading Indian Stories, and Daisy is reading Calico Captive.

Science: We visited the Aquarium this week. We spent time in the Utah exhibit and watched them feed the penguins.  We saw the jellyfish for the first time, and visited the Asia exhibit.

History: We got out the Native American figurines and the kids have been using the play teepee and dressups to play "Indians".

Music: The children continue work in their Suzuki books and our group song Amazing Grace.

Technology: Sarajoy and Sullivan have been using a variety of building sets to practice engineering. Simon is learning coding and word processing. Daisy is getting to know her camera better and taking amazing pictures of autumn.

October 9-16

Math: Daisy, Simon, and Sarajoy worked on Teaching Textbooks online. Sullivan used Math Playground for most of his math this week.

Language Arts: Each child did a reading and writing assignment daily. They also use Gmail and Google hangouts to practice writing and typing notes to each other and their friends.

Science: We read lots of books about animals. The kids are good at identifying a variety of interesting aquatic animals.

History: Sarajoy is reading The Courage of Sarah Noble. Daisy is reading Calico Captive. Simon is reading Indian Stories, Sullivan is reading picture books on various history topics.

Technology: Daisy helped take pictures of her sister for a school dance this week. Simon likes watching minecraft videos and trying new programming. Sarajoy and Sullivan used the wooden Tetris puzzle we got and played with the castle DUPLO legos.

Music: The kids are each progressing in their Suzuki books and working on skills with their instructor. The group song we are learning is Amazing Grace.

October 1-October 8

Math-The kids all worked on Teaching Textbooks.  Sullivan did Math playground.  Simon did his new Tynker Crate.

Language Arts- Daily reading and writing in journals.  The kids enjoy messaging each other on Google hangouts and Sarajoy found a friend she can email. 

Science-Lots of fun with the sea creatures in the kiddie pool.  We got our new Zoobooks and Ranger rick magazines. 

History-We listened to History of US for a couple of hours and studied the first Americans.  We were excited to learn about the people who inhabited Mesa Verde because we went there last year on vacation.

Violin-Kids continued to work on their Suzukin books and our group number, Amazing Grace.

Technology-Daisy is figuring out her new camera and taking some great pictures.  Simon is really getting the hang of Gmail and Tynker.com, Sullivan spent a lot of time building castles this week with our lego set.  Sarajoy got a new Goldiblox set and built it.

September 24-Oct 1

Math: This week each of the kids did lessons in Teaching Textbooks.  They also did online problem solving games.

Language Arts: Each child did reading practice daily as well as daily journaling. They also practiced writing emails on their new gmail accounts.

Science: This week we did a Mystery Science lesson on fossils.  The kids played with their toy aquatic animals in the kiddie pool.

History: We talked about why Native Americans are called Indians.

Technology: Daisy started using her new camera! She took some really great pictures outside. Sullivan and Sarajoy practiced building with legos. Sarajoy also learned how to crochet, which I think is a great skill for an engineer.  Simon is learning how to use his Google account with email and hangouts.

This week our family was displaced due to fires.

Math: the kids did their online teaching textbooks lessons.

Language arts: Daisy read Seeking Persephone. The other kids read books from the Chick FIL A kids meals.

Science: Kept tabs on the fire situation.

History: no history this week as we were away from our resources.

Tech: The kids did emails and played online problem solving games.

Music: Lessons at our relocation. Continued working on Amazing Grace.

September 10-17

This week was a challenge for our family as we were evacuated Thursday due to wildfires. I will give a brief description of our activities.

Math: Daisy Simon Sarajoy and Sullivan all did some lessons in Teaching textbooks as well as online games.

Language Arts : Kids continued work in journals, workbooks, and reading.

History: Each child continued his/her read aloud to mom based on American History. Mom started the family read aloud Indian captive.

Science: A new Zoobooks came about deer so we looked at that. Also spent time talking about wildfires.

Tech: The three youngest got the Duplo logo set out and made several creations. Daisy took pictures.

Music: The children continue to progress on Amazing Grace and their individual pieces. They also spent time listening to the Suzuki CDs.

Weeks 1-3 August 21-September 9 2010

Daisy
Math:
I did flashcards to practice my multiplication facts, I played Krypto with my family, I did lessons in my old math book, and this week I started Teaching Textbooks.  I'm reviewing the earlier grades to see if there are things I haven't learned and slowly working up to my grade level.

Language Arts:
I write in my journal every day.  I wrote and delivered 3 speeches for my Speech and Debate class. I have been reading Seeking Persephone on my own, Auggie and Me to my siblings, and Calico Captive with my mom.  We finished a read-aloud of Island of the Blue Dolphins and watched the movie. We also finished Hatchet.

History: I'm reading Calico Captive with my mom to go along with our American History studies. I also looked up some interesting history facts online and wrote about them in my notebook.  I learned about the great fire of London in 1666 and I learned that the Iceland Parliament building is the oldest parliament building still in use.

Science: I looked up interesting science facts online and wrote about them in my journal. I learned they have found a new organ in the human body and have measured the speed of gravity. We watched a video about sea creatures and visited the Living Planet Aquarium

Technology: I got a new cell phone and started taking some pictures of flowers around my  yard.  I'm studying a sunflower and capturing it each day as it blooms.  My new camera came and I unboxed it and hope to learn to use it next week.

Music: For violin I'm reviewing some of my old songs.  We learned Amazing Grace in our family orchestra and I am working on Bach Bouree in Suzuki Book 3. I'm also working on Beauty and the Beast.

Simon
Math: I played Krypto with my family, I did lessons in my old math book, and this week I started Teaching Textbooks. I got my first Tynker crate and built a paint spinner.  I also do a lot of building with small connecting cubes.

Language Arts: I write in my journal each school day.  I have a language and spelling book that I do lessons in. I'm listening to the Harry Potter Series, Reading the Dolch Indian Stories, and Reading The Mixed Up Twins with my Mom. We finished a read-aloud of Island of the Blue Dolphins and watched the movie. We also finished Hatchet.

History: I started reading the Dolch Indian Stories for the beginning of our American History studies.

Science: I looked up interesting science facts online and wrote about them in my journal.
We watched a video about sea creatures and visited the Living Planet Aquarium.

Technology: I am excited to learn more about coding.  I started the minecraft mod course on Tynker.com.

Music:  For violin I'm reviewing some of my old songs.  We learned Amazing Grace in our family orchestra. I reviewed one of my favorite songs, Ashoken Farewell.  I'm working on Perpetual Motion in Suzuki Book 4.

Sarajoy
Math:  I played Krypto with my family.  I did lessons in my old math book, and this week I started Teaching Textbooks. 

Language Arts:  I write in my journal each school day.  I have a language and spelling book that I do lessons in. I finished listening to Anne of Green Gables and watched the movies with my mom. We finished a read-aloud of Island of the Blue Dolphins and watched the movie. We also finished Hatchet. I started listening to Mr. Poppers Penguins. I am reading American Girl Josephina to my mom.  I got my new American Girl Magazine and have been reading that as well. 

History: I am reading the American Girl Josephina Book. It is about a girl who lives on a ranch in New Mexico. 

Science: We watched a video about sea creatures and visited the Living Planet Aquarium. I read a Zoobooks about aquatic mammals and played with toy sharks and whales. 

Technology: I got my first Goldiblocks set! I build a moving picture spinner. 

Music: For violin I'm reviewing some of my old songs.  We learned Amazing Grace in our family orchestra. My favorite song is Allegro.  I'm almost done with Suzuki book 1.  I'm learning Minuet 2 by Bach. 

Sullivan: 
Math:  I played Krypto with my family.  I did lessons in my old math book, and this week I started Teaching Textbooks. 

Language Arts:  I write in my journal each school day.  I have a language and spelling book that I do lessons in. I finished listening to Prince Caspian. I started listening to Voyage of the Dawn Treader.  We finished a read-aloud of Island of the Blue Dolphins and watched the movie. We also finished Hatchet. I am reading Magic Tree House to my mom. 

History: My mom read Island of the Blue Dolphins to me and we watched the movie. 

Science: We watched a video about sea creatures and visited the Living Planet Aquarium. I read a Zoobooks about aquatic mammals and played with toy sharks and whales. 

Technology: I build super heros out of cube connectors. I helped Simon with his paint spinner and Sarajoy with her Goldiblocks set.

Music:  We learned Amazing Grace in our family orchestra. I'm working on Song of the Wind and Go Tell Aunt Rhody on my violin.
