May 20

Math: This week each of the kids did lessons in Teaching Textbooks.  They also did online problem solving games. 

Language Arts: Each child did reading practice daily as well as daily journaling. They also practiced writing emails on their gmail accounts. It has been exciting for the kids to earn prizes for their reading goals. Sullivan decided to up his game and started reading The Hobbit!

Science: This week we did a Mystery Science lesson. So many things are growing in our yard. It has been fun to watch our early vegetables begin to grow. We will be eating lettuce soon! We have so many fruits beginning in our orchard.

History: We are reading Indian Captive. Each of the kids has a history themed reading book. The kids are each keeping their own history through journaling. 

Technology: Daisy has been outside taking lovely pictures. Sullivan and Sarajoy practiced building with legos. Sarajoy, Simon, and Sullivan love using gmail and google hangouts.

May 13

Math: This week each of the kids did lessons in Teaching Textbooks.  They also did online problem solving games.

It has been exciting for the kids to earn prizes for their reading goals. Daisy is having a great time reading Regency Romances. It has been a good distraction from allergy season.

Science: This week we did a Mystery Science lesson. We went to Thanksgiving Point Gardens.

History: We are reading Indian Captive. Each of the kids has a history themed reading book.

May 6

April 22

Math: This week each of the kids did lessons in Teaching Textbooks.  They have loved the hands-on math with Osmo.

Language Arts: Each child did reading practice daily as well as daily journaling. They also practiced writing emails on their gmail accounts. Reading outside has been lovely.

Science: This week we have had the microscope out.  We are starting to see leaves on our willow tree. Yard cleanup provides a lot of opportunities to see the effects of the seasons.

Technology: Daisy continues lessons with a friend learning to use her camera. Sullivan and Sarajoy practiced building with legos. Sarajoy, Simon, and Sullivan love using gmail and google hangouts.

April 8

Math: This week each of the kids did lessons in Teaching Textbooks.  They also did online problem solving games. Sarajoy is getting better at adding.

Language Arts: Each child did reading practice daily as well as daily journaling. They also practiced writing emails on their gmail accounts. The kids do a daily virtue recitation with their dad each morning.

Science: This week we did a Mystery Science lesson.  We have seen a lot of different kinds of cloud shapes and patterns this week.

History: We are reading Indian Captive. Each of the kids has a history themed reading book.

Technology: Daisy loves to use Facetime and Hangouts to keep in touch with cousins. Her photography continues to improve. Simon is devising ways to earn money to start his YouTube channel. Sarajoy and Sullivan love using the cuisinaire rods to make cool creations.

April 1

Math: This week each of the kids did lessons in Teaching Textbooks.  They also did online problem solving games. Simon is getting better at multiplication facts.

Language Arts: Each child did reading practice daily as well as daily journaling. They also practiced writing emails on their gmail accounts. Daisy is excited a new book in a series she has been reading just came out!

Science: This week we did a Mystery Science lesson. We are learning that the weather in spring can be very temperamental.

History: We are reading Indian Captive. Each of the kids has a history themed reading book.

Technology: Daisy is learning a lot about shutter speed and light. Sullivan and Sarajoy practiced building with legos. Sarajoy, Simon, and Sullivan love using gmail and google hangouts. Sullivan got some fun new Osmo games for his birthday.

March 25

Science: This week we did a Mystery Science lesson.  We weeded our garden and played some games outside.

March 18

Math: This week each of the kids did lessons in Teaching Textbooks.  They also did online problem solving games. Daisy is gettting a better understanding of long division.

Language Arts: Each child did reading practice daily as well as daily journaling. They also practiced writing emails on their gmail accounts. Sarajoy is getting through the Littles Series.

Science: We are learning so much from our Cricket magazines about science and animals. The seeds we planted a few weeks ago are starting to sprout in our garden!

Technology: Daisy started lessons with a friend learning to use her camera. She's gotten some lovely spots of the earth waking for spring! Sullivan and Sarajoy practiced building with legos. Sarajoy, Simon, and Sullivan love using gmail and google hangouts.

March 4

Math: We are taking a break from screens this week. The kids have been doing hands-on math and workbooks instead.

Language Arts: Each child does daily reading and writing. Daisy is learning about extemporaneous speeches in Speech and Debate.

Science: The ripstick in our kitchen has brought lots of fun lessons about physics, friction, and balance. Daisy has even mastered it sitting down with other kids on for a ride.

History: We keep plugging along with Indian Captive. It is fun to learn about the Seneca traditions. We talked about having your mind split about something as Molly becomes more accustomed to her new life, but does not want to forget her original family.

Music: Daisy is getting really good at her violin pieces. Each child does a violin and piano song each day.

Technology: Simon spent an entire day mastering the rubik’s cube! He is so excited! The other kids have been making things with blocks. Daisy keeps taking great photos!

February 25

Math: Daisy, Simon, and Sarajoy did Teaching Textbooks. Sullivan is doing his new math workbook.

Language arts: Each child does a writing assignment each day. They each have a book they’re reading as well: Simon is reading Percy Jackson, Daisy finished Calico Captive and started A Gathering of Days, Sarajoy is reading Littles and Sulli is reading Pirates Past Noon.

Science: The kids spent a day at the Museum of Curiosity at Thanksgiving Point. We have been talking about signs of Spring.

History: we are reading Indian Captive. We got out a dream catcher project to work on.

Music: Each child practices violin each day. They also practice at least one piano piece as well.

Tech: Simon likes making playlists and connecting with cousins to play games online. Sarajoy and Sullivan have been playing with Minecraft blocks. Daisy is working on her photography idea book.

February 18

Math: Daisy, Simon, and Sarajoy do Teaching Textbooks. Sullivan is doing well in his new workbook.

Language Arts: Each child did a lesson in their language book. They all do a reading assignment and a writing assignment daily. Sullivan has been making some really cute drawings and labeling them. Daisy is preparing for a Speech and debate tournament.

History: We are reading Indian Captive. We talked about the author and some of her other books she wrote. She has a unique style for illustrations.

Science: The kids looked up interesting facts on YouTube. Octonauts continues to be a favorite for learning about marine life. Sullivan carries his Zoobooks with him wherever we go so he can read them to people.

Music: Daisy is getting really good at Bach Bouree. The other kids practice violin and piano each day. We are happy to be starting up weekly lessons again.

Technology: Daisy's pictures she takes are just amazing. Simon got on Tynker this week and made a Flash mod. Sullivan and Sarajoy love playing games online and using their email accounts.

February 11

Math: Daisy, Simon, and Sarajoy are doing lessons in Teaching Textbooks.  Simon is interested in getting up to the next grade level and doing more math these days. Sullivan got a new workbook and is doing great!

Language Arts: Daisy started a collection of American History novels and we are so excited she has caught the reading bug. Simon in reading Percy Jackson, Sarajoy is reading the Littles, and Sullivan is reading Magic Tree House. They each do a writing assignment daily as well. 

History: We are reading Indian Captive. Sullivan did a geography report on Florida.

Science: We love reading about animals in Zoobooks and Ranger rick. The kids know most of the species at the aquarium now.

Music: Each child practiced violin daily. They also practice piano. Daisy is learning a new song on the piano.

Technology: Simon is getting really good at typing. Daisy does a lesson each week from her photography book. Sarajoy and Sullivan love using Google Hangouts and playing Zategy.

February 4

Math: Simon is working hard on his multiplication facts along with doing his Teaching Textbooks daily.  Daisy is trying a new schedule and did 4 hours of math today! Sarajoy and Sullivan continue with their math books, playing math games, and using manipulatives.

Language Arts: Daisy is already on her second novel for the month. She has been working hard on Student Congress for Speech and Debate. Simon, Sullivan, and Sarajoy are doing their daily journal entries, language work, and read alouds. Sarajoy especially likes finding a quote to write down each day.

History: Daisy is reading A History of Us and Calico Captive.  She is excited to be spending more time in History because it is one of her favorite subjects.  We read a book about North American Indians this week. 

Science: The kids can't seem to get enough of aquatic life.  We spent a delightful day at the aquarium where the kids are starting to know the creatures by sight. We read lots of shark books. Daisy has been learning about the affects of High Fructose Corn Syrup as part of her Speech homework.

Music: Each of the kids practices violin daily. They also practice a piano piece.  Sarajoy likes playing the Sunbeam song. Daisy has been teaching Simon River Flows in You.

Tech: Simon is getting so fast at typing! He especially loves Nitro typing. Sarajoy and Sullivan love making creations with blocks. Daisy does a weekly lesson in her photography book and continues to wow us with her pictures.

January 28

Math: Sullivan is really curios about math facts, and is constantly asking me about numbers. He also finished his workbook.  The other kids are doing lessons in Teaching Textbooks online.

Language Arts: Each child has a book they read each day. They check in with Dad in the evening and tell him about what they read for a treat.  Daisy just started a writing class with other homeschoolers. She is also doing great in Speech and Debate.  Each child has a daily assignment in their language workbook and journal.

Science: Daisy did science experiments with the kids this week, including "walking water". We got some books and movies about sharks at the library. The kids love everything they are learning about marine life watching Octonauts.

History: The kids learned about the lives of artisists we are studying: Bev Doolittle, John Williams, and Edgar Allen Poe.  We continued our read aloud of Indian Captive. We did another Geography party with our friends and learned all about Ohio.

Music: Daisy started a new song on the Piano and continues studying River Flows in You and working on her violin. The other kids practice a new song and a review song on their violins daily as well as play something on the piano.  They were excited to learn more about John Williams and all of the movie scores he has composed. And they told me his son is in the band Toto.

Technology: Osmo is still a hit with the kids, especially coding jam and the art game. Daisy took some great sunset pictures and did a photo scavenger hunt assignment. The kids use google hangouts and play lots of online learning games.

January 21

Math: Simon, Daisy, and Sarajoy do Teaching Textbooks. Sullivan does his math workbook. Sarajoy has been working extra hard on math facts.

Language Arts: The kids do daily journaling and language workbook activities.  Daisy finished her 14th book in the past 2 months! Sullivan is taking a break from Magic Tree House cause he loves Zoobooks so much. Sarajoy and Sulli played with Boggle Jr.

Science: We spent hours outside looking at the moon during the lunar eclipse.  We got some amazing photos through our telescope of the blood moon.  The kids have been watching Blue Planet.  We know so much about sea life!

History: I read aloud more of Indian Captive to the kids. We love how the author is honest in her portrayal of the prejudice the whites had towards the natives while also letting us see the wholeness in the Native way of life. We did our American Geography party this week with Kentucky Fried Chicken, Benedictines, and Kentucky Bourbon Balls. 

Music: Sarajoy has worked so hard on Minuet 2! She will be finished with book 1 soon! Sullivan plays May song for everyone who will listen.  We talked about the difference between violin and fiddle and decided more fiddle songs might keep things fun.

Technology: Figuring out how to capture photos through the telescope was really tricky! Daisy and her dad figured it out! Simon learned how to create his own folder on our computer to put his creations in.  He did a power point presentation on Kentucky this week. The kids are having so much fun making drawings and music with Osmo.

January 14

Math: The kids continued doing lessons in Teaching Textbooks online.  Sullivan is almost finished with his daily skills workbook and is asking a lot of questions about multiplication. Simon likes a trick his friend taught him about multiplying by 9.

Language Arts: We read the next chapter in Indian Captive together.  Daisy is working on a bill for Student Congress.  Simon caught the reading bug with the Percy Jackson series. Sarajoy finished her first book in The Littles series.  Daisy wants to read all day long.  The kids continue work  in their language arts workbooks and journals.

Science: Sullivan is so happy he is reading fluently enough to read his Zoobooks magazine. He learned all about Australian mammals this month. Sarajoy and Daisy did an activity from  Click magazine about penguins.  We spent a couple of cold sunny days at the pond learning about winter and ducks and muskrats, training our dog, and talking about protected species. 

History: We read in Indian Captive about what kind of clothing the Indians wore and how Molly is learning how to gather wood and pound corn.  One of our own family traditions is to make snowflakes when we take down Christmas decorations.

Music: The kids made up songs about geese at the pond. Everyone is working hard on their latest violin songs.  Sullivan is especially proud to have mastered May Song.

Technology: Simon did his tinker crate and loves learning about how to make a you tube channel. Daisy took a stunning picture of a leaf on a stump at the pond.  Sarajoy and Sullivan love building with Goldiblocks and setting up Sullivan's domino rally maze.

January 7

Math: Simon, Daisy, Sarajoy are using Teaching Textbooks. They have also found some fun online math practice games. Sullivan is loving doing math activities on the Osmo.

Language Arts: Each of the kids does journal writing, spelling practice, and they send messages to each other and me while I am at work. They each have a book that they read on their own and books they read to a parent. Sullivan is especially showing a lot of fluency and loves the Cricket magazines. Daisy reported reading 8 novels last month!

Science: The kids have learned so much about aquatic  animals watching Octonauts.  Dad brought a book home from work about Sharks that everyone enjoyed. Dad also watched Blue Planet with the kids.

History: Daisy is asking a lot of questions about Jane Austen and English customs as she reads through Regency era books. Simon, Sarajoy, and Sullivan are working through their American history books.

Music: We are reviewing our songs on violin after taking a break for the holidays. Simon and Sullivan performed at a talent show.

Technology: Daisy took some fantastic Christmas pictures and completed another assignment in her photography book. Simon got some really fun brain teasers for Christmas. All of the kids have loved coding Jam on the Osmo.
